Injury Benefit (DSS)
Overview
An Injury Benefit may be awarded to a person registered under the Social Security Act (Cap. 318.) and who suffers from personal injury caused by an accident arising out of, or in the course of his employment or self-occupation. The Injury Benefit may also be awarded to a person who has developed a disease or condition (occupational disease) related to the place of work. This benefit will only be granted for an employment for which Social Security Contributions are paid for.

Injury Benefit related to an injury at work:
The Injury Benefit payment starts after the following three (3) consecutive working days from the date of injury. The day of injury and the following three (3) working days are to be paid in full by the employer.The first payment is not issued until the applicant has been examined by the Medical Board, appointed in accordance to the Social Security Act (Cap. 318.), unless the person returns to work prior to ten (10) calendar days after the caused injury.
If a person is certified by the Medical Board, appointed in accordance to the Social Security Act (Cap. 318.) as being still unfit for work, and a year has elapsed from the date of injury, accordingly the benefiċiary is required to submit a weekly medical certificate to be awarded Sickness Benefit.
If a person has suffered a permanent disability due to the injury incurred and after twelve (12) months of being in receipt of an Injury Benefit, s/he may apply for a one-time Injury Grant, Injury Pension or Invalidity Pension by application, including a detailed, medical report filled in by a medical specialist. In the report, the specialist will need to list the severity of the disability. The case will then be reviewed by a Medical Board, appointed in accordance to the Social Security Act (Cap. 318.) that will decide upon the case and the total percentage disability suffered. When receiving Injury Benefit, Self-Occupied persons will also be granted Social Security Contribution Credits. No Social Security Contribution Credits are granted to employed individuals since their employer pays their Social Security Contributions.
If there is a disagreement between the employer and the employee, the Department of Social Security requests an investigation from the Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA). A request for an investigation by the Health Authorities may also be made, but this is not initiated by the Department of Social Security.
Injury Benefit for to a disease / medical condition related to the place of work
In such cases, the employer is not required to complete the Employer's Declaration. Only the Disease / Medical Condition Report must be completed by a medical doctor.All of the information above about the Injury Benefit for a work-related injury applies.
If there is a disagreement between the employer and the employee, the Department of Social Security requests an investigation from the Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA). The Health Authorities may also request an investigation, but this is not initiated by the Department of Social Security.
Application Requirements
The Injury Benefit application and supporting documentation must be received by the Department of Social Security within ten calendar (10) days of the date of injury.

Eligibility
A person who suffered injury on duty, that must have compromised the person’s ability to work for over three (3) calendar days.
A person who has developed a disease / medical condition related to the place of work.
General documentation:
In the event of a workplace injury, an Employer's Declaration must be completed. In the case of a self-occupied person, a police officer must also complete the declaration. This declaration can be downloaded by clicking here.
