Blue Medical Certificate (BMC): IBAN Update – Old vs New
The reverse side of the Blue Medical Certificate (BMC) has been updated. While both the old and new versions of the BMC enable the payment of sickness benefits directly into the beneficiary’s bank account, there are important differences in how the IBAN number is referenced and updated.
Old Blue Medical Certificate:
Previously, the BMC included a section on the reverse side where beneficiaries would manually write their IBAN (bank account number) each time they submitted a certificate for a Sickness Benefit claim. Any change to the IBAN required the beneficiary to provide the new IBAN on the next certificate submitted.
New Blue Medical Certificate:
The updated BMC no longer requires the IBAN to be written on the certificate itself as shown below. Instead, beneficiaries are now directed to update or view their bank account details, including the IBAN, through the Department of Social Security’s mySocialSecurity app by entering the URL in web browser: bankingdss.gov.mt
Summary:
This new approach means the BMC is now used solely for medical certification, while all bank detail updates (including IBAN changes) are managed online. This enhances security, reduces errors, and streamlines the process for beneficiaries.
