Voluntary Payment of Class 1 Social Security Contributions

Overview

The Voluntary Payment of Class 1 Social Security Contributions according to Article 13(1) of the Social Security Act (Cap. 318.) of the laws of Malta, is intended for Maltese residents employed under a contract of service abroad of Malta or abroad of any European Union member state and hence provides continued Maltese social security contributions coverage while employed abroad. Maltese residents who work with an international institution like the United Nations, the European Union, or the Council of Europe may also be eligible to apply. Under this scheme, Class 1 social security contributions are paid at the applicable rate according to the basic income as per the Tenth Schedule of the Social Security Act.

Through such social security contributions payment, a person enhances his/her record of social security contributions and therefore his/her eligibility to a Social Security Contributory Pension.

Eligibility

  • Applicants were/are employed outside of Malta or any EU or EAA Member State or Switzerland during the insurability period/s intended to be covered by the application.
  • The employer is registered outside of Malta, the EU, the EEA and Switzerland.
  • Applicants were/are employed abroad under a Contract of Service during the insurability period/s intended to be covered by the application.
  • Applicants were/are employed with an International Organization.
  • Applicants were/are ordinarily resident and domiciled in Malta during the insurability period/s intended to be covered by the application.
  • Social Security contribution payments can be made in arrears up to a maximum period of five (5) years back from the current year according to Article 116 of the Social Security Act, as long as the period insured in arrears is covered by foreign contract/s of service.

Documentation required

  • A copy in English of foreign Contract/s of Service.
