Age Pension

Overview

An Age Pension may be awarded to a person who reaches sixty (60) years of age, does not have enough paid or credited Social Security Contributions to be eligible for a Contributory Retirement Pension, while needs to satisfy the Means Test.

Eligibility

General eligibility criteria:

 

  • An applicant is either married, in a civil union, cohabiting or single and in receipt of the Unemployment Assistance or the Social Assistance and reaches sixty (60) years of age.
  • If an applicant’s spouse or partner reaches sixty (60) years of age prior to the person responsible for the household, one may apply for the Age Pension in her own right, until the person responsible for the household reaches pension age, where in turn they will be awarded a married rate.
  • If a person reaches the pensionable age and is entitled to a Social Security Contributory Pension which is less than the non-contributory pension, the applicant needs to apply for the difference in the Age Pension.
  • The applicant must satisfy the Capital Means Test. The capital resources for a couple must not exceed twenty-six thousand euro (€26,000) and sixteen thousand euro (€16,000) for a single person.
  • Any income deriving from rents, bank interests from capital, stocks and shares, maintenance and any other derived income, needs to be declared and deducted from the non-contributory pension rate.

Documents required

General documentation: 

  • Bank Statements of all local and foreign bank accounts.
  • Rent Receipts or the rent contract if you are paying rent where you are residing.
  • Logbooks of all cars in possession.
  • Document/s related to any property in possession or having part of.
  • In case of any donations, whether as monetary or airspace property, related documents need to be provided.
  • If married or in a civil union or cohabitating (whether registered cohabitation or not) and spouse or partner is employed, a copy of the payslip needs to be provided.
  • In the case of separated or divorced persons, a copy of the separation contract or divorce documents need to be provided.
