International Day of Older Persons – 1 October
We are fortunate to have older people around us, whether they are family, friends, or simply acquaintances. Older people are fonts of knowledge, experience, and storytelling. They can motivate us to keep working — or they can warn us of dangers we aren’t aware of. We should seek their advice whenever and wherever possible. Unfortunately, far too often, we forget – or worse, ignore – the older people in our lives. That is one of the many reasons why the International Day of Older Persons, celebrated on October 1, is such a wonderful day.
How can you Observe International Day of Older Persons
Chat with an older person
We may see an older person in a new light and learn something about ourselves if we take the time to get to know them, even if they are in our own family.
Be ready to assist
There is much that can be done to make life easier for the elderly. What is one thing you can do to improve the lives of elderly people in your own family or community?
Become an advocate
It’s important to recognize what the United Nations says “enhanced attention to the particular needs and challenges faced by many older people is clearly required.”
