  • An annual Contributory Retirement Grant for Non-Pensioners is paid to persons with a deficient record of Social Security contributions. Thousands of persons, mostly married women, have benefitted from the bonus introduced in 2015. Over the years the bonus rates have been gradually upgraded and a fundamental change was introduced in 2015 to make the bonus more representative of the actual number of paid-up contributions. Variable rates, ranging from €600 to €1,050, are now paid in respect of an individual’s record of contributions.
  • Elderly persons, residing at home, are allowed a subsidy to employ carers of their choice on a full-time or part-time basis. The subsidy, introduced in 2017, was increased in 2026 by another €500 to €9,000.
  • Elderly persons can opt to engage a helper of their choice for a number of hours on a weekly basis to assist them with household chores and to run errands.  The hourly rate is subsidized.
