Certification of Insurable Employment Periods in another European Union (EU) Country – Form U1

Overview

The U1 certificate is crucial l for workers who have relocated within the European Union (EU). It provides a record of your social security contributions and employment or self-occupation periods in any European Union (EU) country, which is necessary for claiming unemployment benefits. However, this certificate does not facilitate the transfer of social security contributions between countries. The U1 certificate is issued by the country where you worked and paid social security contributions

What you’ll get

You will receive a U1 certificate outlining your social security insurance periods under the Maltese social security act (Cap. 318.). This certificate serves as proof of the social security contributions paid in Malta, which you can use to claim unemployment benefits in another European Union (EU) country.

When applying it is important to ensure that all your employment details are accurate to facilitate a smooth processing of your application.

Eligibility

Eligibility criteria:

  • You must have paid enough social security contributions as requested for the benefit through either employment or self-occupation.
  • The U1 certificate does not apply if you were employed in Malta but did not pay social security contributions because your work activity was not considered insurable.

Documents Required

General documentation required:

  • Identification document with a photo, either a valid identity card or passport.
  • Termination form from your last employment issued by the Maltese agency Jobsplus.
  • All officially signed FS3s from all your employments from both full-time and part-time employment.
  • Social security contribution receipts during your insurable periods in Malta if you were self-occupied, irrispective of whether you were working full-time or part-time.
