Eligibility

  • An applicant is in receipt of the Unemployment Assistance or the Social Assistance and reaches sixty (60) years of age.
  • If an applicant’s spouse or partner reaches sixty (60) years of age prior to the person responsible for the household, one may apply for the Age Pension in her own right, until the person responsible for the household reaches pension age, where in turn they will be awarded a married rate.
  • If a person reaches the pensionable age and is entitled to a Contributory Pension at a lower rate than the Age Pension rate, the applicant may apply for the difference in the Age Pension.
  • The applicant must satisfy the Capital Means Test. The capital resources for a couple must not exceed twenty-six thousand euro (€26,000) and sixteen thousand euro (€16,000) for a single person.
  • Any income deriving from rents, bank interests from capital, stocks and shares, maintenance and any other derived income, needs to be declared. This income is deducted from the non-contributory Age Pension rate. Failure to declare such income may result in overpayments which would then need to be refunded.
