Celebrating 68 Years of Social Security in Malta

07/05/2024 | Latest News

On the 7th of May, Malta commemorates a significant milestone: 68 years of social security. It was on this day in 1956 when the National Insurance Act was enacted, paving the way for the Contributory Benefits system, including retirement and widows pensions, and eventually invalidity pensions amongst others.  This day is not just a date on the calendar; it is a celebration of the nation’s unwavering commitment to social protection and national solidarity. Since its inception, Malta’s social security system has been a cornerstone built on the first social protection initiatives of past years ,, providing financial support to those in need and ensuring that no one is left behind.

The social security system in Malta is more than just a safety net; it is a reflection of the country’s values and a testament to its progress. It embodies the Maltese spirit of “social welfare” – a term that resonates with the idea of safeguarding the well-being of every citizen. Over the years, this system has evolved to address the changing needs of society, offering assistance to the elderly, the unemployed, families with children, persons with disabilities or afflicted by ill health, and other vulnerable persons.

As we celebrate this historic occasion, we recognise the countless individuals who have contributed to the strength and resilience of this system. From policymakers to workers, their collective efforts have ensured that social security remains responsive and robust. The celebration is also a time to reflect on the challenges ahead and the need to adapt to an ever-changing world.

The theme of this year’s celebration, “Pillar of Social Protection and National Solidarity”, underscores the role of social security as a fundamental human right. It highlights the importance of solidarity – standing together to support those who face hardship and where the social security system acts as protector of the most vulnerable while providing coverage to the different sectors of society .

As Malta looks to the future, the commitment to social security remains unchanged. It is a pledge to continue building a society where everyone has the opportunity to live with dignity and security. The 68th anniversary of social security is not just a commemoration; it is a reaffirmation of Malta’s dedication to a fair social security system that upholds the values of protection, support, and national solidarity.
